Hangover Smoothie Recipe

One of the main times to be hungover is over the festive season, and one of the main causes of a hangover is dehydration- alcohol is a diuretic. The impurities in many alcoholic drinks can leave us feeling pretty rough.

So rehydration is key and if you have a delicate tummy then a simple smoothie to sip during the morning is a good option. It’s also vital to help your body recover from potentially a long period with little real food by providing a gradual energy boost and replacing lost nutrients and electrolytes (especially if you have vomited!). This energy-boosting, thirst-quenching smoothie is a safe bet to help any hangover. It contains prune juice (a source of potassium; iron, manganese and vitamin B6) – all of which are nutrients that can be helpful for coping with that dreaded ‘morning after the night before’ feeling.

Here’s how it works: Vitamin B6 and iron contribute to reducing tiredness and fatigue, whilst potassium helps normal muscle function.
Vitamin B6, manganese and iron contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism; and manganese helps protect cells from oxidative stress.

Ingredients (for one person)

One large banana
150ml California Prune Juice*
150ml whole milk
100g fresh, frozen or tinned berry fruits eg blueberries, raspberries, blackcurrants or mixed berries
1tsp wheatgerm
1 heaped tbsp smooth peanut butter, salted
Optional: ½ tsp borage

Just blend together all the ingredients.
Pour half into a glass and store the rest in the refrigerator for later.

California Prune Juice (eg Sunsweet) can be found in Booths,  Co-op, Holland & Barrett, , Nisa, Ocado, Tesco and Waitrose
